Design for Castledermot Pastoral Centre
Client
Fr. Brendan Cantwell
Project Type
Conceptual design for Pastoral Centre
Location
Castledermot, Co. Kildare.
The genesis of this conceptual design project are the existing holy elements on the site and the axes which connect them; the axis of the main nave of the Church of the Assumption, and the axis that links the bell tower with the grotto.
The pastoral centre takes the form of a cloister which embraces the existing sacristy and is eroded by these axes. The axes inform the layout of the pastoral centre, creating space for a welcoming yard, separation between the two parts of the building for day-time and night-time uses, and a contemplation area overlooking the grotto. The erosion of the cloister allows for visual links between the holy elements and through the pastoral centre.
